Asbestos is a mineral that was used in a range of building and insulation materials and is still found in domestic, agricultural, commercial and industrial infrastructure.

Asbestos Containing Materials ( ACM’s ) are classified Hazardous Waste when removed from a building if the asbestos content is greater than 0.1%. Legislation governing work with asbestos and disposal of asbestos includes the Control of Asbestos Regulations ( NI ) 2007 and the Hazardous Waste Regulations ( NI ) 2005.

Containment


Asbestos waste has specific containment requirements which meet the prerequisite for treatment of hazardous waste under the EU Hazardous Waste Directive and is consistent with HSENI Approved Codes of Practice.

Material must be double wrapped and/or bagged in 1000 gauge polythene and stored within secure containers prior to transfer. Asbestos waste cannot be recycled or treated, it must be landfilled.
